A conman engages a University literature professor in a bar and encourages him to talk about himself and his work. The professor is particularly knowledgeable about Earnest Hemingway. He mentions that a brief case full of Hemingway’s early works had been stolen before Hemingway had become successful and those works were never recovered. The conman then suggests that the Professor and he could make some big money by “finding” some of these missing Hemingway works. Eventually the Professor and his wife agree to the scam and the professor attempts to write a pastiche of one of the missing works. However, there are unthinkable consequences that result from trying to change history, and powerful entities that deal with those consequences when necessary. I liked the concept of the scam, but it became overshadowed by the consequences that resulted. The Hemingway Hoax won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards for Best Novella of the Year in 1991. It is definitely worth reading, but I didn’t like it as much as I have liked many other books by Mr. Haldeman. ( ) nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

The Hemingway Hoax is a Hugo- and Nebula-winning novella that weaves an intricate plot of a fake Hemingway manuscript with time travel, multiple universes, and the potential destruction of the omniverse itself. *** Hemingways first wife, Hadley, lost a bag containing the manuscript of his first novel on a Parisian train. In 1996, John Baird, a renowned Hemingway scholar, decides to use that loss to account for a fake manuscript he creates. *** Little does Baird suspect that his attempt to pass off the forgery as a recovered Hemingway manuscript will take him on a journey involving parallel universes and time travel. For Hemingways reputation is intricately linked to the fate of multiple worlds in the omniverse and any attempt to change that can have disastrous consequences.
