There's a bird wearing a Dalek t-shirt. That's all I needed to make me adore this book. (That, and the lovely message about friendship, but.... BIRD IN A DALEK SHIRT.) ( )

This book was so cute! I absolutely loved it! I would use it in class to show to the kids that everyone can be different and that’s ok. I would tell the student that it is more important to be happy then to be “popular”

I really enjoyed this book, it was so funny and so cute! The author used language creatively in the book to make the birds relatable to human kids. For example, Nerdy Birdy played World of Wormcraft instead of World of Warcraft. I thought the plot of the story was really well-paced and well developed. I liked that at first Nerdy Birdy was outcasted, then accepted, and then was part of a group who was outcasting and stuck to his belief that nobody should be outcasted and stood up for the bird being outcasted. It showed that he stuck to his morals the whole time. Lastly, I liked the illustration style because it was different. It was not very neat and there was coloring "outside of the lines." I think it was very fitting for a silly, not very serious story. The message of this story was to include everyone, especially because everyone has felt excluded before and it hurts everyone. ( )

I gave this book 4 stars because I liked that it's theme was unity and it was very apparent throughout the entire book. This picture book would be useful in a classroom at the beginning of the school year, especially if there is a student who isn't seeming to fit in or doesn't seem to have any friendships forming. This book was about a little bird who didn't look like any of the birds they were around and didn't seem to have anything in common with them. All of the birds wouldn't accept Nerdy Birdy because he had glasses and was short and liked to read. The other birds all seemed to have something in common with each other, except Nerdy Birdy. One day, Nerdy Birdy came across a group of birds that were accepting of him and welcomed him into their group. The birds even liked to read like Nerdy Birdy. Once Nerdy Birdy became part of this group, his life changed because he felt like he finally fit in. When Nerdy Birdy was with his friends, a bird approached them. This bird did not look like Nerdy Birdy or his friends and did not enjoy reading, but Nerdy Birdy welcomed him into their group anyways because he remembered what it felt like to be excluded. When Nerdy Birdy did this, his friends in the group questioned his decision because this bird was so much different than them. Nerdy Birdy told them that anyone was welcome to be his friend, which the other birds did not like. Nerdy Birdy decided he was going to leave his friend group and become friends with the lonely bird because he never wanted to make someone feel excluded. I feel that many students could relate to Nerdy Birdy's experiences at the beginning of the book and could strive to be like Nerdy Birdy at the end of the book, after having it read to them. ( )
