A well-told fictionalized story based on an actual tragic event at one of America's earliest nuclear reactors, located in then-small, sleepy Idaho Falls, Idaho. Seemingly minor (at first) glitches spiral out-of-control with disastrous results in a tale of self-serving sneaky cover-ups, mismanagement and unintended consequences. Based on a true story about the only fatal nuclear accident in the US. Paul and Nat move to Idaho Falls. He is in the military and will work on one of the country's 1st nuclear reactors. Paul soon discovers the reactor is compromised but his supervisors cover up the problem. He has a major blow out with his supervisor and is sent to the Arctic Circle for 6 months. While he's gone, Nat has a friendship with a local man, Esrom. Rumors start to fly with the supervisor turning the screws on Paul. When Paul returns he takes off after arguing with Nat. He ends up back towards the reactor and discovers it has had a meltdown, trapping his buddies inside. He attempts to rescue them and becomes contaminated. Ironically, Esrom is a firefighter who is also contaminated at the scene. They end up at the same decontamination center. Esrom is released before Paul and Paul enlists him to take his family out of the area. Nat send the girls with Esrom and rescues Paul from the decon center. They end up reconciling, he leaves the army and they relocate to a private reactor site in Illinois. I can hardly believe this is a debut novel. I love this book so much. First of all, the writing is perfection. The characters are wonderfully flawed, and the plot is a page-turner. She took a true story about a nuclear accident, and fictionalized it...and it was glorious. I cannot recommend this book enough. I can't wait for Williams to write more, because I will eat it up. Book Flap: “Based on a true story of the only fatal nuclear accident to occur in America, The Longest Night is a deeply moving novel that explores the intricate makeup of a marriage, the shifting nature of trust, and the ways we try to protect the ones we love.” Paul & Nat Collier, mid-twenties, two kids, 1960 Idaho Falls Idaho I didn't think it was a spectacular book but this incident is one every North American should be familiar with, so it's worth reading. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

A slow-burner of a book with excellent characterization and satisfying conclusion. Novelist Andria Williams chooses a little-known and mostly covered-up piece of American history (the first and to-date, only, nuclear reactor accident with immediate fatalities) for her debut.
Set in the early 1960's in Idaho Falls, ID, Williams tells the story of a young Army specialist, Paul Collier, his wife, Nat, and their young daughters. This was the era when people married very young, had kids very young, and many scraped by without any of the "luxuries" common place today (a TV, a second car for the family, etc.)
Paul's boss is Master Sargent Mitch Richards -- an underworked, overprivileged excuse for a leader who not only thinks he is much smarter, charming and good looking than he really is, but who takes whatever amount of power his rank gives him and lords it over those beneath him. God, I hated this guy (probably because I've known I few just like him in real life!) Mitch's wife Jeannie, with her steely perfect exterior, knows her husband is a buffoon, but just tries to bide her time until his pension kicks in. Until then, she's the chief "mean girl" among the Army wives.
Some of my GR friends felt this book was a bit too slow, but I didn't find that to be the case at all. I found the pacing to be taut and loved the exploration of the characters' actions and motivations as the stories at work (and at home) unfolded.
Thank you to Random House and NetGalley for a galley of this book in exchange for an honest review. Although I had a galley of the book, I opted to listened to the audio, which I can also recommend. ( )
