No, it was a rather annoying book, with characters who just lived their lives and did not 'do' anything to end the misery they were in, it was, despite all the violence in the relations, a rather dull book to me. (  ) BoekenTrol71 | Mar 31, 2013 | ) jerhogan | Jan 9, 2013 | Part of the problem may lie in the nature of the narrator, whom the reader learns is flawed as a novelist, and who drifts by on the edge of the story. At one point, it is suggested that the narrator tends to dwell too much on researched detail. Certainly, the (over-)careful descriptions of Helsinki can drag the narrative thread down. It may be fun for some people to 'spot' local sights, but I did not need to know the exact name and location of many of the places where the story unfolds. There is a lot that hits the mark: a middle-aged man in love with a younger woman; a hopeless love triangle; characters who seem unable to change. The conclusions, however, are left open.
