This story is a great opportunity to talk about guilt, fear, and family. It also brings up great points about culture and music and how the two are completely intertwined. Reyna discovers that her abuelo played the vihuela in a Mariachi band before she was born. When she accidentally breaks the vihuela one day, she travels through her community in search of anyone who could help fix the instrument. Along the way, she hears anecdotes about her grandfather, receives gifts that give her insight into her abuelo’s life and culture, and gains a deeper understanding of and connection with her family. The following book is about a little girl named Reyna who gets mad about her Mothers restaurant being too loud that she accidentally breaks her grandfather's guitar (Vihuela). Determined to fix it, she goes around trying to find someone to fix it. While on the look she learns about her Grandfather's musical career and hears about his impact. She and an owner of a music store fixed the Vihuela together and once it is fixed she goes back to the restaurant to share her grandfather's gifts. The story does take place in Mexico and it would be good to read to incorporate other cultures. You can read it for grades 1st-5th. Reyna is upset because her mother’s restaurant is too noisy and, while expressing her exasperation, accidentally breaks her grandfather’s vihuela (a guitar used to play mariachi music.) While trying to get it fixed she discovers various aspects of her grandfather’s musical career, which had not previously been of interest.
