Book 2 in the D-List Supervillain series, Origins takes us back to Cal’s pre-villain life. Brilliant engineer, arrogant and cocksure, Cal quits his cushy job for a better one, only to find himself blacklisted, unemployable and broke. Life has taken a serious downturn. When he “breaks bad,” taking some cash and a valuable necklace, he is able to finance his criminal career. A few quick successes and Cal gets the taste for crime and begins reaching higher, as in bank robbery. And that’s when he gets caught by an overweight, has-been superhero and tossed in the super max prison for supervillains.
We know the basic story of Cal’s decent into crime from the first volume in the series, but Origins takes us there in detail through Cal’s unique and sarcastic way. It’s fun to root for the bad guys when the heroes are so annoyingly self-righteous. Without spoiling the plot, there is an especially funny scene where Cal gets so drunk he lends his armored suit to an equally drunk friend who causes all kinds of mayhem and revenge.
Jeffrey Kafer reads book 2 with great skill, equally enjoyable to the listener as the first volume. He is now the voice of “Mecani-Cal.”
If you enjoyed Confessions of a D-List Supervillain, you will like Origins at least as well. There are plenty of clumsy villains to amuse the listener and even another love story. Origins, like its predecessor, is a comic book novel that’s just fun. Keep ‘em coming.
