Moving and unsentimental story of inner reconstruction after a devastating loss. This is the story of a broken family coming to terms, in the aftermath of the earthquake in L'Aquila in 2009, with the loss of one of them - a twin sister, a daughter, a mother - while living in temporary accommodation on the outskirts of the city. The terse and clean voice of the spiky, single, thirty-something female narrator wards off sentimentality while guiding us through the inner reconstruction undertaken by each character individually and by the family as a whole, letting us witness the extraordinary poetic power of love and the renewal of hope. Her twin sister begins her narrative three years on. Sharing a small, temporary flat with her elderly mother and the troubled teenage son of Olivia (his father flits in and out of his life) she weaves in the many aspects of life that are different now. Their clandestine forbidden visits back to their destroyed former homes; neighbours coping with tragedy at different rates; memories of Olivia; a slow return to life of feelings and interests.
Because she doesn't come across as sentimental or hugely vulnerable, this works brilliantly. I'd forgotten all about this earthquake and was googling the massive devastation as I read. Very very good read. ( )
