The futility of falling in with our "yesterdays, and they stay there forever, petrified, congealed, powerless to return." The one-eyed detective finally catches up with a Mexican actress on the run from drug-dealers and stalkers, a girl he has loved since the first glance of a inside of a stocking in school twenty years ago showing us how nothing ever stays the same and is never quite what you thought it was in the first place. I am so glad I picked up this book! This is actually the seventh book in the series, the fifth that's been translated into English, but there's a hugely informative essay at the beginning that fills the reader in on what went before. You need to know that Héctor has a body "impervious to wounds", that he was killed and resurrected. When Héctor was a teenager, he had a sweetheart. Now she's a famous movie star, except that she's disappeared, and his daughter comes asking him to find her. This is about the literal frontera, the U.S.-Mexico border, but also the borders of reality and dreams, past and present and future, who we are and who we were and who we want to be. There are whores and narcotrafficantes, people who still have dreams and people whose dreams have died. It's too bad that not all of Taibo's books have been translated, but you can bet I'll look for the rest that have been. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

The sweetheart of Héctor Balascorán Shayne's adolescence-the same one who has become a famous Mexican movie star-has disappeared into the magical reality of the U.S./Mexico Border. Her daughter hires the detective to find her and bring her home. He wanders la frontera, traveling the empty roads between Tijuana and Mexicali and Juárez. Between nostalgia and reality. He falls in and out of love, he talks with the ghost of Pancho Villa, he asks lonely questions about the dirty business of narcotraficantes, and he listens closely to the story of the whores of Zacatecas. They, like his sweetheart, seem to have disappeared forever, their absence creating chaos back home. Balascorán Shayne, who at heart is an anarchist and incurable romantic, answers his own questions with two sticks of dynamite. Only then can he say goodbye to the beloved of his youth. The Héctor Balascorán Shayne detective series are best sellers in Mexico, Latin America and Europe. In the U.S., Belascorán Shayne has a rabid and growing clan of aficionados, but to insure that the popularity of the series continues to grow, editor Bobby Byrd and translator William Verner add an Afterword forFrontera Dreams.Their essay includes a biography of the detective, a brief synopsis of the novels to date and an artist's sketch of him. The drawing portrays all the scars on his bullet-riddled body and details in which novelPaco Ignacio Taibo IIinflicted these myriad wounds on his beleaguered hero.
