This book focuses on the “Feminist Revolution.” It tells how three women, Susan B. Anthony, Margaret Sanger, and Betty Freidan, influenced women’s rights. History teachers can have students look at laws during the 1870s about trials by jury. They can determine how Susan B. Anthony’s rights were neglected. Students can look at the numerous laws that were in place the hindered women’s rights. Students can also look at how bicycles helped women gain some independence. Students can also create a timeline of each of the women’s achievements. English teachers can have students write an essay on which of the three women was the most influential to women’s rights. Students can also look at censorship when reading the section on Margaret Sanger. While some schools may not find the topic acceptable, science teachers can have students look at different birth control methods and discuss what was used in Margaret Sanger’s lifetime. Math teachers can have students create graphs showing the pregnancy percentage rates for the different countries before and after birth control was taught. Teachers could also look at the fashion of the time. Students could look at the creation of bloomers and look at the way Susan B. Anthony dressed and cut her hair. While the sentence structure of this book is not very complicated, some of the topics may not be suitable for younger students. The book does discuss birth control and abortion. The book is arranged into five different sections. The first section is an overview of the “Feminist Movement.” The next three chapters are biographies of Susan B. Anthony, Margaret Sanger, and Betty Freidan. They are arranged chronologically and each is split into twelve smaller sub sections. The final section is on the movement is heading today. This one particular section makes me question the accuracy of the book because the copyright date is 1991. Therefore there has been twenty years added to this final section. The book does include a table of contents, a bibliography, and an index. There are also a few black and white photographs scattered throughout the book, but not very many. I would recommend this book for students to use as a reference on the three women, but this would not be a book that I would use in its entirety. It is too outdated and I am sure that teachers could find a more useful source. ( )
