Three separate movies. The first, about Smilodon in the Americas is cheesy, but still kind of interesting as it compared this ancient cat to modern cats. Smilodon was massive in the chest and shoulders, stubby in the back legs, had a short stumpy tail, and seems also to have had a relatively fragile lower jaw. The conclusion is that this was an ambush predator that wrestled its prey to the ground and didn't use its teeth until the animal had been more or less overpowered. Very different from modern, lighter cats, which were probably all better runners and much more likely to bring their teeth to bear to detain or overpower their prey. Also, the number of skeletons preserved in the La Brea tar pits is just enormous. The second is about dire wolves touches on the same themes as the previous and generally compares the dire wolves to their contemporaries, the ancestors of todays gray wolves which weren't much different than modern gray wolves. Emphasis on the evidence that the animals survived massive debilitating injuries for quite a while indicating that they were getting food other than by their own unaided efforts. Lots and lots of broken bones; hunting was tough. Quite a few bite marks; a lot of social aggression among those wolves. Few cubs found in the La Brea tar pits indicating that the dire wolves may have brought up their cubs in a relatively safe place, like modern wolves. Versatility of modern gray wolves indicates one possible reason for the survival of their ancestors; the modern animals hunt mice, rabbits, deer, fish, elk and bison when they are really hungry.
