Peter the main character lives with his Grandparents and had been asked repeatedly not to play out in the meadow because of the dangers of wolves. On this day Peter defies his grandfather. Peter goes out into the meadow leaving the garden gate open and accidently allowing the duck escape. The duck decided that it wanted to go swimming in the pond nearby, while there it started arguing with a bird. While the duck and bird are arguing a cat joins them. And then a big wolf does indeed come out of the forest. The cat quickly climbs into a tree, but the duck, which has jumped out of the pond at this point, is chased, caught, and swallowed by the wolf. Peter then races into action, fetching a rope, gets the bird to help distract it while he lowers a noose and catches the wolf by its tail. The wolf struggles to get free, but Peter ties the rope to the tree and the noose only gets tighter. Thank goodness hunters arrive and help Peter and the duck.

Comprehensive Strategy: I think that this would be a great book to use as a book-talk to get the students excited about reading it on their own. Teachers can also have older students write their own adventure. Can start by asking students if they ever did something even when a family member told them not to. ( )

This is a popular story about a young boy who lives at his grandfathers house and sees a wolf outside his window. This tale is so popular that it has its own music. Children can learn about the different instruments used to play the music. ( )

This book is about a young hunter, who helps a duck and a bird from getting attacked by a cat. Soon afterward a wolf eats the duck and the young boy tries to help the cat and small bird from getting eaten as well. The boy comes up with a plan to help the animals by catting the wolf with a rope. The boy triumphs and catches the wolf as his peers admire his accomplishment. Another a tale that would be great to talk about in a class when it comes to folktales. ( )

Adaptation of Prokofiev's classic tale, Peter is told by his grandfather not to go into the woods because there may be wolves out there. Not listening to his grandfather, Peter heads into the forest to help out his duck, cat, and bird friends from being eaten by the wolf. Unafraid, Peter climbs the tree and lassoes the wolf by the tail, saving his friends. ( )

This is a really cute adaptation of a classic story. In different versions the wolf character can be scarrier or less scary, but I think the illustrations in this one find a happy medium.
