"President Theodore Roosevelt is known as "the man with a plan," the "rough rider." His figure stands tall in American history; his legacy stretching him to larger-than-life proportions. But before his rise to fame, he was just "Teedie," a boy with ambitious dreams to change the world, and the conviction to see his stupendous imaginings brought to fruition. As an American president, he left an impressive mark upon his country. He promised a "square deal" to all citizens, he tamed big businesses, and protected the nation's wildlife and natural beauty. His fearless leadership assured that he would always be remembered, and his robust spirit now dares others to do mighty things. In her moving picture book portrait, award-winning author Doreen Rappaport uses her well-honed approach of personal quotes and vivid prose to spin together the tale of a sickly boy who became a monumental man. Coupled with C.F. Payne's dramatic artwork, the story of President Teddy, touchstone of American history, is brought to life"-- "This picture book biography explores the life of Theodore Roosevelt through vivid prose and the president's own words"--… (altro)

Summary
This book gives the life of teddy Roosevelt. As a child he was oftensick but was interested in animals he did a great many things in many political offices. Most people did not like him until he came home as a war hero. He then became president.
Personal reaction
I learned many things about Roosevelt that i hasn't known before like he wona nobel peace prize and his first presidencey he only became president because the elected one was killed.
Classroom extension
1. Have students write about what they beetle was most interesting about Roosevelt life and give reasons why.

I believe the author Doreen Rappaport as well as the illustrator C.F. Payne were able to come together and create a book that makes the history of Theodore Roosevelt come alive which I applaud. The first thing I enjoyed was that the author decided to use quotes from Theodore himself. Quotes like, “By Godfrey, this is fun!” gave me a deeper insight into the man he was and the life he lived. I also liked how C.F. Payne painted images that were symbolic of the words written on the page. One example is on the page where Theodore says, “Our aim is to control business, not strangle it.” The illustration is of an overly large fist tightly grabbing a stack of cash symbolizing trusts. Theodore Roosevelt, though smaller than the hand, has wrangled the money grubbing trusts with a rope in his attempts to control them. Overall this book paints a picture of Teddy Roosevelt’s life, showcasing his love of life and determination to help the world around him. ( )

This picture book is the story of Theodore Roosevelt from his childhood through his second run for Presidency and eventually, his death. The story includes both quotes from Teddy Roosevelt himself, text written by the author, a list of important events and additional resources to learn more about him. The resources include books, articles and websites. The illustrations are done in deep colors that show detail and enlarge characters to make Roosevelt appear to resemble a bobble head. The illustrations are intricate and will amuse children.

I would use this biography picture book with 3rd graders to show cause and effect. The story includes many of Roosevelt's accomplishments during his political career. It shows his push to serve the peaople and explains the effect he had in each office he held. I'd like the students to work with a partner to discuss key events in the book, answering questions such as, "what happened?", "why did it happen?" and "what caused it to happen?". Students will create a T-chart to show cause and effect, using words such as "because", "therefore", and "since" and include phrases such as "this led to", "as a result", and "for this reason". ( )

This illustrated biography of the life of Theodore Roosevelt takes the reader back in to this beloved president's childhood and through his years as the President of the United States. Themes of Roosevelt's life and presidency reflected in the book include leadership and service. Roosevelt used his power as president to benefit others and to protect the natural environment. Biographies are wonderful classroom tools that give students examples of people who started out very ordinary and went on to do extraordinary things.
