A cute early reader for the Valentine season. Broken into four chapters, the layout of the book gives a nice transition to traditional chapter books. The illustrations do a good job of showing the reader the action that is happening in the story. The story has plenty of opportunities for the reader to engage the group to think about what might happen next. A nice story to talk about feelings when a person likes someone. ( )

The story begins with Mouse making Valentines for Valentine's Day. Mole was also planning to make Valentines. They were friends, Mole was in love with a Mouse. Together, they made each other beautiful Valentines. Mouse delivered her Valentine to Mole to his house. Mole and Mouse delivered all their Valentines to their friends. Mole delivered his Valentine to Mouse's door. Mole forgot to sign the Valentine. So, Mouse thought it was a secret Valentine. They ate lunch later on; Mouse got a craved cheese with a Valentine line on it. Mouse was desperate to find her secret Valentine. She went out to search; meanwhile, Mole went to buy a box of chocolates for Mouse, and roses. He was so shy and embarrassed as he prepared his Valentine gift for Mouse. He invited Mouse to the dance floor, but Mouse received the message a little late. Mole waited impatiently, but Mouse made it and it was the greatest Valentine's Day ever!

Cute story about loving friends. The sequence of events that brought Mouse and Mole together can be organized into a chart and the class can talk about each event or write it as they read the book. They can come up with their own Valentines Day confusion or change and event in the story and write the ending. ( )
