I breathed a sigh of relief at the last lines of the book. Although the reading went smoothly, that was more because I had to put in the work. I wanted to finish it within a week, after all I will be looking for a new book again on Friday. The characters and their thoughts are constantly negative, in thoughts, in actions and in words. There are occasional hints of niceness, but overall I wouldn't want to sit down at a table with any of them for a cup of coffee and conversation.
Campert's language irritates me. I expected something other than foul language and swearing from a renowned writer. I think that always indicates a lack of creativity. Fortunately, there is some positivity towards the end. Nora's mother who assists her ex in the hospital. And Walter who regains his courage in the last pages. I did not lack the courage to finish the book, and therefore ultimately experience Walter's last dream, which gave a positive twist to my reading experience. ( )

A well-written novella or short novel about a writer who seeks isolation to resolve a problem but is found or discovered by the press, and thus prematurely driven to go home. ( )

Wat me soms stoort aan films, waarom ik liever boeken lees, die vanzelfsprekendheid van het belang van de in beeld gebrachte personages, het onafwendbare samenkomen van de verhaallijnen, het stille staren door het raam, het obligate drama, de twee stappen terug, de een stap vooruit, het happy end, … dat stoort me allemaal een stuk minder in een boek van Remco Campert. Het boek leest als een James Bond-film, het is allemaal wat banaal, de ouders treden wat te veel op de voorgrond, maar zonder die ouders wordt het verhaal wel heel erg dun … Wat overblijft: Walter Manning. Je gunt hem zo nog een boek … ( )

Remco Campert schrijft eenvoudig, maar het is een genot om te lezen. Geen grote verhalen, geen complex plot, maar gewoon de beschrijving van iemand die rust wil hebben. Overigens zit in dit boek wel een interessant plot zodat alles aan het einde samenvalt. Maar dat is zo logisch dat het niet meer stoort. Ik leefde met de hoofdpersoon mee in zijn streven naar rust.
