Deciding to earn some money Vicky and Joe leave their village home in Spain to teach in a private American school in Bahrain. The book is interesting for its insights into life in Bahrain and how a fee paying private school there operates. The style of the book is chatty and relaxed as we move through the school year and they settle into an expat life. The Arab spring disrupts their stay and how this affected Bahrain is written about.

Really a 3.5. I enjoyed learning about Bahrain, and about the school as well. Hard to believe that it was such a free-for-all, but one of the other reviews was from a teacher with similar experiences that vouched for it. You have to wonder how they learned anything. I don't recall having heard about the political uprisings at the time. How sad. I also felt badly about some of the other teachers who were not well liked for various reasons. It got me to wondering how the author deals with that, how much has been changed, could they ever recognize themselves, etc. I have to admit though I was happiest of all when they got home to Spain! And the recipes! I think I am going to devote a whole week to them someday! ( )
