Chicklit urban fantasy. But surprisingly fun for all that. Probably the best I've read by Klasky, who's been a bit hit and miss sometimes. Somewhat Mary Sue, in that Jane discovers she's the most powerful witch in at least the county but first she has to learn how to use her skills.

Jane works in the Peabody library. As a cost saving measure she's moved into the old gardener's cottage within the grounds. On her first night in there she discovers the hitherto locked basement door opens to her hand and contains a vast treasure trove of magical books and paraphernalia. Without quite knowing what she's doing she manages to cast the first spell that comes to hand - one that free's the former witch's familiar from it's decade long stasis as a cat statue. Nico barely has time to start causing trouble and exploring his freedom however before Jane is disturbed by another visitor - tall dark and handsome. Such a rash act on the dark of the moon, has brought a Witch's Warder from Hectate's court - a male physical guard and counterpoint to the witch's powers, David is supposed to guard a fully trained witch's physical presence whilst she works her arcance knowledge. Jane and David quickly realise that Jane needs a lot more training than is custom. Such strangeness is all too much for Jane and the next day she retreats to her best friend's bakery for a girl's night our drinking mojitos. Melissa has the perfect antidote for Jane's confusion - yet more tales of her dating disasters.

The remaining two books follow a very similar theme - Jane discovers some form of problem, magical in nature. Various men and family blunder about randomly causing more troubles, Nico offers fashion advise and Jane goes drinking with Melissa. There's plenty of romance, a little bit of not very graphic sex and it all works out right in the end. Fun but not really my thing! ( )
