This book was fantastic! Loved that Justin wrote about one of the Doctor’s oldest and deadliest foes the Cybermen.

He portrayed the 11th Doctor amazingly and the same with the Cybermen. As I was reading it I could see if playing in my mind like an episode. I loved the twist with Victor and Marie! I did not see that coming. (

Just the thing when none of the other books lying around are tempting. First, it's a Who fix, and the author managed to give it a good Matt Smith feel. Next it's set in a small town in Europe somewhere, sodden with rain, menaced by wolves, with a castle, so points for classic Gothic trappings. Then, it's steampunk Cybermen. It manages to hit that sweet spot for action without being too violent, with amusing dialogue, but seriousness of purpose.

I have suddenly discovered the delights of [whatever the word is for what is basically professionally-penned fan fiction?]. Now I know why the are 27 billion Star Trek and Star Wars books: it's fun to hang out in these universes.

The Eleventh Doctor is on his own again and somehow ends up in a 19th-century village that is gripped with plague. Since the title gives a bit of the show away, one can safely assume that the Cybermen are involved somehow. Just how they are involved is what you will have to read to find out.

This Eleventh Doctor adventure felt a bit strange to read after seeing the Twelfth Doctor's first season on the show, mainly because the idea of Cybermen rising from graves reminded me of the season finale, "Death in Heaven", and the idea of Cybermen harvesting spare parts from humans was like the clockwork android in "Deep Breath." But this book came first, having been published before Peter Capaldi was even announced as Matt Smith's replacement. The plot itself was all right, and the writing serviceable. There were some very Matt Smithy bits of dialogue that worked quite well, although the "X objects are cool" catchphrase was used a bit too much. Overall this is a very quick read that will scratch the Dr Who itch if you have one. (

Delivers on Cybermen and the 11th Doctor. Fast, breezy read that felt like an aired television episode. (

riffs on the classic vampire mythos; Justin Richards has of course gone for the Cybermen (who are not all that far from the undead anyway). New Who has actually been doing quite a good job of reimagining the Cybermen in their last couple of appearances; this novel has strong links to both the TV story Closing Time and the 8th Doctor audio The Silver Turk, though I felt not quite as good as either. I had expected that this would be an Eleven/Clara novel, but in fact it's Eleven-on-his-own, with one-off companion Olga. (Pedantic niggle: Olga not such a likely name for a woman in a German-speaking village in Central Europe in the 19th century.) A decent enough effort. (
