"Vacationing at a luxurious Tuscan island resort, Nicolas Duhamel is hopeful that the ghosts of his past have finally been put to rest... Now a bestselling author, when he was twenty-four years old, he stumbled upon a troubling secret about his family - a secret that was carefully concealed. In shock, Nicholas embarked on a journey to uncover the truth that took him from the Basque coast to St. Petersburg - but the answers wouldn't come easily. In the process of digging into his past, something else happened. Nicolas began writing a novel that was met with phenomenal success, skyrocketing him to literary fame whether he was ready for it or not - and convincing him that he had put his family's history firmly behind him. But now, years later, Nicolas must reexamine everything he thought he knew, as he learns that, however deeply buried, the secrets of the past always find a way out. Page-turning, layered and beautifully written, THE OTHER STORY is a reflection on identity, the process of being a writer and the repercussions of generations-old decisions as they echo into the present and shape the future"--… (altro)

A disappointment for me. I kept waiting for something of substance to be revealed about Nicolas and his family, but every aspect of his life and his journey remained superficial. After reading Sarah's Key, this was a letdown. ( )

Had a strong dislike of the narrator. Put it aside during a bad day and never felt tempted to pick it back up.

Hate Nicholas. Read some reviews and found that I am not alone in my disgust w/ this character. deRosnay's descriptive writing is wonderful and I know there's some BIG SECRET that the main character is going to discover that may or may not change my opinion of him, but I'M DONE. Too many books sitting on the table to waste time with something that I am FORCING myself to read. ( )

I've said for a long time that it's dangerous to make a novelist or poet the central character of your novel. Mostly I thought it was because the character can never be a better writer than you are. Now I see a new danger: Tatiana deRosnay's Nicholas Kolt has not only allowed himself to be corrupted by success, his success is based on writing too close to his own life. And now we must wonder how close deRosnay's life is to any of her novels.

When Nicolas arrived at the Gallo Nero, he felt as if this was not a hotel, but someone's home, a long ocher house with a dar red roof and green shutters.
