overlong, pretentious excursion into Oriental philosophy and finances

One of the books I read while in Thailand, this book definitely made me miss the USA. An orphan leaves the mountainous canyons of China to explore the canyons of New York City. Along the way he discovers himself, love, and a family. An engaging work that defies sterotypes and shines with great charm. ( )

Tough read filled with words that are not used in everyday conversation; therefore, keeping a dictionary close at hand is necessary. For the first read, I found the deep storyline difficult. Superficially the read is easy enough, but not particularly interesting. Consequently, to really pull out something worthwhile this book must be read (at least) one more time...and it's a LENGTHY one. ( )

I was disappointed with this book, it seemed contrived and overly wordy. It failed to hold my interest or capture place and character like Ruin Creek also by David Payne. ( )
