AFTER THE WAR by Libby SternbergA decade after the war, its devastation still haunts them...In the summer of 1955, a young nun awakens in Johns Hopkins Hospital after suffering an overdose, unable to remember the events that brought her there. As she recovers, she becomes the center of quiet struggles among those who surround her: her brother, a former GI still stung by betrayal during his years of service; her sister-in-law, a beautiful woman seeking love at any price; her confessor, a Jesuit priest who lost everything during the bombing of London; her nurse, a war widow whose sunny optimism leads to repeated disappointment; and her doctor, a psychiatrist beset by survival guilt and doubts about his profession's ability to heal. Suffering from unseen war wounds ten years after the fighting ended, they each find their way to a very personal peace."...a touching novel of faith and family...an evocative story of love lost, and found, told with beautiful language and emotional clarity. A novel to savor." Christy English, author of The Queen's Pawn____… (altro)

I’m having a bad run with ER books – this is the second one I’ve given up on before the end. I found it very hard to get into the story as it seemed very slow. I had several tries before I gave up but never got further than chapter four when I decided that I wasn’t interested in the characters and certainly didn’t care about them enough to read on. ( )

Bittersweet, this highly character-driven tale portrays a moving picture of the lives of those affected by WWII. Also, a very interesting look at convent life pre-Vatican II. ( )

I had a hard time reading this book. There were some scenes that dragged, and didn't hold your attention well. However, I did like some pf the characters and there were parts worth reading. ( )

For some reason I found that this book did not hold my interest. I ploughed on hoping that the storyline would eventually capture me but it did not. After 100+ pages I gave up. What I did read was well written. However, the narrative dragged along much too slowly.
I would not buy this book for myself or as a gift to pass onto someone else. ( )

The part where we're hanging out in an unbearably hot, stuffy hospital room with an unresponsive nun almost had me running for the hills (or at least somewhere with modern air-conditioning), but once we got out of there and got to know some of the characters, this became an enjoyable read.

This is one of the better books I've received through Early Reviewers. ( )
