This is the compelling story of two Japanese American brothers following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. One brother loses his appetite in the internment camp and refuses to eat, the other sneaks out in search of fresh fish to entice his little brother to eat.

Fish for Jimmy provides readers with a captivating tale about the unfair treatment and harsh realities Japanese American families faced during World War II. Following the events at Pearl Harbor, the reader experiences the story of a Japanese American family that is placed in a relocation camp. Jimmy, Taro and their mother are placed in the camp while Jimmy and Taro’s father is in jail. Jimmy, undergoing a traumatic experience, refuses to eat. The book goes on to tell a story about how Taro looks after his little brother and makes sacrifices to keep a promise he made to his father. A fantastic story about the power of family, responsibility, and the love between brothers. The illustrations and simplicity of storytelling make this a great read for all ages! ( )

Fish for Jimmy by Katie Yamasaki is based on the experience of a Japanese American family who were sent to the Japanese Internment Camps during WWII. This book will be easy for young children to relate with. It shows a loving, hard-working family who work in the community farmer's market. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the FBI tells the family that they are considered to be a potential enemy, and they must uproot their lives, and head to the camps. This is a powerful lesson that even young children will understand. The younger of the brothers, Jimmy, has an especially hard time, and he weakens. The older brother, Taro, sneaks out to collect fish for his brother to eat. This story is about the love and devotion of a family who face an unfair time in American history. ( )

Fish for Jimmy by Katie Yamasaki is a wonderful tale about a Japanese American family that is forced into an internment camp during World War II after the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. Jimmy's father is taken from them and placed in prison while Jimmy, his mother and older brother Taro are forced to move to a camp. Upon arrival, Jimmy refuses to eat and slowly becomes withdrawn from his family and community. Because of Taro's promise to his father to care for Jimmy and his mother, Taro sneaks out from the camp during the night to retrieve fish for Jimmy to eat. The love and sacrifices that Taro makes are truly inspiring. In the author's note, the author mentions that Fish for Jimmy was based off of some of his relatives. This story has a beautiful message and stresses the importance of family in times of trouble. ( )

I figured since I had been reading so many holocaust books I should broaden my knowledge on the other concentration camps that have occurred throughout history. So, I decided to gain more experience with the Japanese-American camps that happened after the bombing of Pearl Harbor because I had no clue these even existed. In this book "Fish for Jimmy", we follow brothers Jimmy and Taro who are forced to leave their home. Jimmy loses his appetite and stops eating. This is where older brother, Taro, takes matters into his own hands and risks his life every night to find Jimmy fresh fish to eat so that he gains back his strength. I honestly cried after reading this book because I know my older brother would do the same for me and it really hit home in that aspect. The courage it took for Taro to risk his life every night for his little brother was truly amazing. This book is also based off of the author's real-life experience in the camp which made it even more powerful. Great book! ( )
