 With his new novel, The 'Geisters, Nickle manages to capture another of horror's delicious thrills: spookiness. From the first page, The 'Geisters exudes a hindbrain-teasing sense of lurking menace, the haunted-house creak of an impending apparition. It's a spectacular feeling, and Nickle tightrope-walks it for 300 too-short pages, building to a climax that's spooky, creepy and scary besides -- and all the moreso because of that long journey on the verge of fear.  Nickle takes his time unspooling the story, leaving readers to experience it through the disorienting perspective of his main character. However, the author squanders narrative momentum by alternating chapters between Ann’s encounters with her spook-addicted in-laws and her own family upbringing. Ann’s backstory feels mundane and overly detailed, even though it does tie in to the final payoff. The novel’s main attraction is the truly intriguing idea of the society of ’Geisters manipulating Ann and her ghost. To be fair, Nickle does get to the point eventually, with climactic scenes that are genuinely transgressive and deliver the right degree of skin-crawling revulsion.
When Ann LeSage was a little girl, she had an invisible friend--a poltergeist, that spoke to her with flying knives and howling winds. She called it the Insect. And with a little professional help, she contained it. And the nightmare was over, at least for a time. But the nightmare never truly ended. As Ann grew from girl into young woman, the Insect grew with her. It became more than terrifying. It became a thing of murder. Now, as she embarks on a new life married to successful young lawyer, Michael Voors, Ann believes that she finally has the Insect under control. But there are others vying to take that control away from her. They may not know exactly what they're dealing with, but they know they want it. They are the 'Geisters. My Thoughts: This is a very strange book. I'm not sure how to take it, actually, but it left me profoundly unsettled. The question or who or what the Insect is remains unanswered—was Ann just a profoundly disturbed individual, or was there another entity involved in everything that happened? What truth was there in any of the story? We're left with no set answers and a lot of unsettling questions at the end of the book. Fans of dark fantasy and ghost stories should enjoy this book. I know I did, even if I have to wonder at my own mental health for doing so.
