The United States is in the throes of two unfolding energy revolutions, and partisans - convinced that only their side holds the key to American prosperity, security, and safety - are battling over which one should prevail. In The Power Surge, Michael Levi takes readers inside theserevolutions. He shows how oil and gas production, after decades in decline, are being propelled upward by new technologies and high prices, prompting enthusiasts to predict an economic renaissance and impending energy independence. On the other side of the fight, he visits eco-startups andmanufacturers betting on a new energy future, revealing how more efficient cars and trucks are increasingly dominating the road and costs for renewable energy have plummeted, leading many to herald a starkly different future that moves beyond fossil fuels and saves the planet.Armed with on-the-ground lessons, and drawing on insights from economics, politics, international relations, and climate science, The Power Surge takes on the big claims made by both sides in the fight over American energy, explaining why the purists are often wrong. Both unfolding revolutions inAmerican energy offer big opportunities for the country to strengthen its economy, bolster its security, and protect the environment. Levi shows how to seize those with a new strategy that blends the best of old and new energy while avoiding the real dangers that each poses.… (altro)

I had to work to get through this book, but found it immensely valuable. The author discusses the pros and cons of different types of energy and injects some realism into the debate over renewable and traditional sources of energy. I had to read and re-read every chapter. ( )

Levi's book is a detailed look at the debate over energy policy in this country, and the way that oversimplifying and underestimating that debate can impact national security. Levi is a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations focusing on energy and the environment, and he clearly understands his subject in great depth and has taken great pains to see firsthand where energy is produced and how the technology is researched. At times, this makes for an overwhelming read. Fortunately, he frequently takes a more journalistic approach and tells the stories of real people affected by efforts to find new, cheaper, and more efficient sources of energy. The author doesn't place himself firmly on either side of most major energy issues, but instead takes an objective look at the challenges we are facing and the impact of the way we choose to approach them. The Power Surge is one of the best books about our current energy problems I have read. without being preachy or doctrinaire and without partisanship, Mr Levi gives a well balanced sophisticated analysis of how we got here, and why most of the easy solutions (and most of all the other solutions ) proposed will not work for a very very long time. He backs it up with an impressive knowledge base, without being overly technical. I can't recommend this book highly enough ( )

The future of energy is no easy conversation, and yet it's integral to the lives of nearly every person living today. Where our energy sources are going to come from and how much it's going to cost are discussions that are just as rife with misinformation as information.

Michael Levi's book makes a decent case for an optimistic future, but this is not light reading if you're a layman like me when it comes to the politics of energy. I recommend The Power Surge for those already somewhat versed in the language of energy and energy policy. The content here is fairly dense. ( )

I found Mr. Levi's latest book enlightening and well-reasoned. It probably didn't hurt that i agree with his premise that a balanced approach is needed in America's energy policy. If his intended audience is the general population of U.S. society (as opposed to academic culture), Mr. Levi may have missed the mark a bit. While the length is quite appropriate (about 160 pages of actual content), it could do with a less pedagogical approach. The addition of some charts and graphs to reinforce his statistical content and summaries at the end of each chapter would help keep popular readers focused on the points he makes.

In spite of Mr. Levi's hopeful conclusion that all sides of the energy/environmental issues should work together for a balanced solution, the disappointing conclusion I come to is that American energy policy will probably continue down the uncertain and inefficient path it has been following for most of the past 50 years. While I hope for the best, as Mr. Levi obviously does, I remain pessimistic that American will - as expressed through our disappointing leadership - will unite to produce sensible direction for the future of energy in America.
