I loved this story. The main character's voice felt so authentic and sincere. I don't know if this was autobiographical in any way, but it was just so relatable for me. The only part that hit a little bit close to home is that the main character is bullied for her weight and has a lot of anxiety about being fat or weighing too much. I found that a little bit triggering. Besides that though, I really liked the main character's voice/narration. It felt very well realized like I said and I enjoyed the interweaving of her summary of Jane Eyre. I liked the fox and the happy ending and the art was beautiful. It might be a bit cliche but I really liked how more color started appearing as she started making friends and feeling more confident and happy. The art style really reflected the story well. ( )

It is something many kids go through: invisibility, cruelty, alienation. Helene, our young narrator is having this experience, but she escapes her social banishment into "Jane Eyre". She draws witty, sarcastic, and a bit self-deprecating comparisons between herself and Jane (and a sausage).

This is a story many of us can recognize- there is most likely someone in your class, on your bus, or in your family who has gone through this experience.

The illustration is lovely and enhances the solitude of Helene. It has touched my heart and also made me laugh.

CW: Bullying

Well that hurt.

I think it's safe to say that we have all been the person who is on the outside at some point in our lives, so it's hard not to connect with the feelings portrayed so incredibly well in this powerful graphic novel. If you have children in your life that you love then you will understand the pain of rejection on a deeper level because of the time they came home and no one wanted to be in a group with them, or the time everyone got a party invite except them, or the time everyone said they couldn't play hopscotch with the group. You know that pain don't you? Well this book captures it perfectly.

If you have children in your life that you love then you will also understand the feeling of bubbling joy when they came home with their first friendship bracelet, when they scored a goal and the whole team gave them high fives, and the time when the class clapped and cheered after their amazing performance. Well that warmth and joy is captured wonderfully in this book too.

I'm not sure how to put my thoughts into words, but the art is pretty and it captured the feelings that young teens have in middle school since it's/was such an awkward time for us all. I think the fox was a point of symbolism and didn't need to have a fleshed out story to go with it, but that is up to the reader interpretation. ( )
