A dazzling follow-up to the novel Faces in the Crowd , this collection of literary peregrinations around the margins of metropolitan life demonstrates Valeria Luiselli's equal virtuosity as a writer of non-fiction. Evocative, erudite and consistently surprising, these narrative essays explore the places - real and imagined - that shape our lives. Whether wandering the familiar streets of her neighbourhood, revisiting the landmarks of her past, or getting lost in a foreign city, Valeria Luiselli plots a unique and exhilarating course that traces unexpected pathways between diverse ideas and reveals the world from a fresh perspective. Here, we follow Luiselli as she cycles around Mexico City, shares a cigarette with the night porter in her Harlem apartment, and hunts down a poet's tomb in Venice. Each location sparks Luiselli's nimble curiosity and prompts imaginative reflections on topics as varied as the fluidity of identity, the elusiveness of words that can't be translated, the competing methods of arranging a bookcase, and the way that city-dwellers evade eye-contact with their neighbours, while spying on their lives. Sidewalks cements Luiselli's reputation as one of Latin America's most original, smart and exciting new literary voices.… (altro)

a rambling, casually pretentious undergraduate creative nonfiction thesis which takes an hour to read -- keep in mind that You Will Not Get That Hour Back

the highlights of this slog:
- the "Achille Beccari (1860-1893)" section on p. 104 has interesting insight on secular upbringings
- repeatedly reminded me to cop [b:The Walk|160315|The Walk|Robert Walser|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1172284265l/160315._SY75_.jpg|49527483] which i've been abstractly wanting to do ( )

This collection of musings and thoughts provoked by travels and locations were thought provoking and delightful, more morose than joyous but always honest ( )

This was an unexpected delight. My favorite was "Manifesto a velo" but all of the essays were like tiny jewel boxes, something wholly literary written by someone who has a deep understanding of literary academia (IMHO, or maybe it's how philosophy has seeped into lit crit that makes Luiselli's ideas feel like grad school in the best possible way). Nooteboomachtige impressies van een veelbelovende schrijfster. ( )
