In my opinion, the book "Europe" is a great introduction to a multicultural, informational book for young readers. One thing I liked about this book was that it introduces children to a lot of different cultures in a simple and creative way. It discusses the geographic aspects of Europe, German culture, culture in the United Kingdom, Italian culture, art, architecture, weather, animals, and "modern marvels." While this seems like a lot of information, the text is clearly written in large font, the ideas are simplified, and there are only a few sentences on each page. For example, page 9 entitled, "People of Europe," reads: "Each country has its own language, foods, and customs. In Germany, people speak German. They celebrate a festival called Oktoberfest." This simply introduces the reader to the German culture without having to many words or complex ideas. I also like how each photo has a caption so the reader knows what is going on in each photo. For example, page 13 that talks about Italy has a photo of people in the rivers of Venice. The caption reads: "People riding boats in Venice, Italy." This simply explains what is going on in the picture without going into too much detail. I also really liked the "Modern Marvels" page. It talks about the Millau Viaduct which is the world's tallest bridge. My favorite thing about this page was the extension questions at the bottom of the page. One of them reads: "Can you find the triangle shapes in this bridge?" This allows the book to not only relate to cultures of Europe, but extends into math and makes the reader think about the structure of the bridge. The big idea of this book was to inform and teach readers about some basic components of Europe like cultures, art, and architecture. ( )
