Leo won't tell Mariel what he did the two years apart and the author doesn't tell us. I don't know if he is right to keep it a secret because all we get is vague statements about dangerous & risky behavior. It makes it hard to know Leo or care about him.
The problem seems dragged out. In the end he goes to his family for help and the problem is solved quickly, which just made me annoyed he didn't do it earlier. (
