Opening by explaining what immigrants are and stating that most of us immigrants too, as someone in our family is not originally from the country, this book explores immigrants and immigration issues. Starting with how immigrants get to this country, by ships and planes, the story evolves to explain what immigrants bring with them to this country and how they become immigrants. The book then goes into four immigrant children, Boris, Rosa, Maria, and Chang and their stories of immigrating to the United States. Through their unique stories we learn about their lives in their own countries, why their families chose to move to the United States and how they are adjusting to their new homes. I think this is an excellent book for all children as it explains immigration and helps you see through the eyes of the immigrants. ( )

Where did your family come from is a book about immigrants. The book focuses on four young children, Boris, Maria, Rosa, and Chang, who were each born in a different country, but now live in the US. It talks about how the US is a land made up mostly of immigrants, the first coming hundreds of years ago. They come for freedom, safety, better jobs and opportunities, and to be near relatives. The book also talks about the process to become a citizen, and how immigrants have brought many ideas, like pizza, the waltz, soccer, and sushi, to the US. Boris was born in Moscow, Maria in Italy, Rosa in Mexico, and Chang in Korea. Each of them gets a chapter in the book, which addresses how they arrived in the US and how they adapted to their new homes and schools. They are able to choose what they want to do in life while remembering their past, present, and how it shapes their future. This book provides a positive outlook on the lives of immigrants. Colorful illustrations help the readers see each child’s journey to the US. A great book to introduce immigration to students and how it affects many lives. ( )

While this book has a lot of information about how individuals become immigrants into various countries, including the United States, it is very stereotypical of certain cultures. It tells the story of four children that are immigrants of the United States from a variety of countries. it details how immigrants travel to their new country, what kind of work they can find, and what steps they must take to become citizens of the United States. While I found the information correct at times, there were several instances where the information was out-dated or stereotypical of particular cultures. This book could be a great way to inform individuals about immigrants, but many of the details can be seen as incorrect or inappropriate. ( )
