Roux, a botanist by profession and training, wrote one of the best history books I have ever read. He systematically demonstrates, with excellent use of primary sources, the English colonial genesis of Aparteid. Most blame the Dutch descended Boers for the worst of South Africa's recent history. But Roux shows how the English created the institutions and the bureaucracy to impose Aparteid rule. It was also the first history book to show the non-white protest movements in full detail and the non-white people not as simple "victims" of oppression but intelligent and organized. “One of the first histories to treat non-whites as active self conscious protagonists in twentieth-century South African affairs rather than as a dark acquiescent host before which the really important story of white South Africa unfolds. The new edition has been corrected and eight new chapters extend the coverage to the end of 1963. It is an important addition to the literature about South Africa.”—The Historian Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
