A little lamb wants to make his wool splendid like the sweater the boy wears. Throughout this endeavor, the little lamb gets himself into scrape after scrape, and the boy is always there to rescue him. It is a calming sweet story of friendship. This book was one of our favorites to check out of the library, and when I saw it at a library sale you can be sure I brought it home. Red Berry Wool is out of print, but many used copies are available.

This is a sweet story about a young lamb named, Lalo who admired a young boy that watched over the sheep herd. The boy wore a beautiful bright red sweater that Lalo's mother told him was made from their wool. Lalo wished his wool could like the boy's nice sweater. He was happy the boy wore their wool because other kids in the town wore bright shiny jackets with lettering on them. One day Lalo looked in the pond and was embarressed of his shaggy wool with thorns in it. He ran to his mother and asked how humans make wool. She explained that she watched the process once. There were four steps, wash it, spin it, dye it, and knit it. Lalo immediately jumped into the cold pond and rolled around in it getting so dizzy and wet that he slipped on a rock and couldn't swim. The boy with the berry sweater came to the rescue and hugged Lalo drying him off in his arms. Next, Lalo needed to spin his wool, so he went to an empty meadow and spun in circles until he lost balance and fell over a cliff hanging on by a rock. The boy came to his rescue again and hugged Lalo picking the thorns out of his back. Lalo realized he was already halfway done with the sweater making process. Next he needed to dye the wool. He knew of the perfect berry patch where he rolled around in the berries getting caught in leaves and branches when suddenly a large snake bit him! He cried for help and was so far away he was worried the boy wouldn't hear him, but once again he came to the rescue. The boy sucked the poison out of Lalo's leg so he wouldn't hurt anymore. Lalo was happy, again in the arms of the boy. He had only one step left, he needed to knit the wool. He ran to his mother to ask what knitting means. She thought for a minute and replied that it means to be together. Lalo ran to the little boy and sat with him watching the sunset. The sunset turned everything berry red, and Lalo finally had a red sweater he wanted and was happy with his new friend.
