Don't let the Republican drive the bus! : a parody for voters

From the satirical masterminds behind the New York Times best-seller Goodnight Bush (more than 125,000 copies sold) comes this scathingly funny political parody of the contemporary children's classic Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!   As any left-leaning parent of small children will tell you, these days it seems like the Republican Party is taking its tactical and ideological cues from a screaming, mid-tantrum toddler. That's certainly how authors Erich Origen and Gan Golan feel: The parallel came into sharp relief as they read the beloved picture book Don't Let Pigeon Drive the Bus! to their own children. In this wildly funny (and uncannily spot-on) spoof, Origen and Golan take on the Republican political machine, represented here by a cartoonish, hyper-conservative vulture, who wants nothing more than to drive the bus (even though he secretly hates public transit); give rides to his top hat-wearing, white male cronies; and run over as many "socialists," environmentalists, and public employees as he can find. Timed to coincide with the 2012 presidential election, this witty and hilarious satire turns over-the-top Republican antics into fun-loving political child's play. But, like most children's books and their parodies, it also comes with a liberal dose of warning if we, the reader (...and the people), don't heed the call: If you don't want to get thrown under it, then please...Dont' Let the Republican Drive the Bus!… (altro)

I don't normally like children's books (they are very thin and there are a lot of them!), but when I see one of the pigeon books coming in the book drop I can't help but smile. This time it was a big grin. My coworkers and I read the book and then had to order copies for ourselves. What a marvelous and truthful adventure. Timely, too.

(Just to clarify, this particular book is not for children. Rather, it is a parody for adults.) ( )

I received this book in the first-reads program.

While I'm not opposed to parody books, this one came up a bit dry for me. The tone of the book itself kept switching between a rather adult tone (hence the reference to the Southern strategy) and a childish one (the Democrat decrying that the food "tastes like chicken.. which it was itself.) By not sticking to a consistent tone I felt a bit robbed of the full experience.

As expected, the book took a hard line against the Republicans. What surprised me, however, was that at the end in the "epilogue" it took a stance against the Democrats as well. What the book left me with, as a reader, was a generally confused bewilderment as to what the book would agree with at all. If both parties are awful, then why exactly take a stance that would further such animosity? It seemed strange.

Hilarious parody and an even funnier parody. But the sad part is that "Don't Let the Republican Drive the Bus" is a pretty accurate account of the way Republicans are acting. I, for one, plan on voting..... early AND often....in order to keep them as far away from the bus' driver seat as I can. Everybody else needs to do "their" part, if they care at all for America and its people. ( )
