I like this book because I think it has excellent illustrations and they are big. It is a fold out book so it is big enough that all of the children would be able to see the illustrations. I also liked that it described the different kinds of boats in a fun way. For example, when you first open the book the first page says, "what am I?" The next page then describes one thing about that particular boat and then you have to open up the flap to get to the next clue about the boat. The students can make an educated guess on what type of boat is being described. The big idea of this story is to educate students on the different types of boats. ( ) Can you guess all the boats in this fold-out book? As each flap unfolds a new clue is revealed. Starting with the tiny rowboat to the mighty ocean liner, readers are given visual as well as textual clues. Each page folds out into a large square showing the answer to the nautical riddle. This is a beautifully designed book for boat lovers of all ages. Slaughter has the ability to create wonderfully imagined and designed books some with flaps, some without and this book is no exception. The hand made illustrations have a retro nautical style and color palate. Collage elements and large, flat block print-like shapes create a bright and colorful environment. The text is simple and follows a quickly established pattern. Uses the same signature format and style as the series' previous titles. The question "What boat am I?" and a linked written clue invites kids to lift the first portion of the folded page to reveal another clue and more of the featured boat, and then a final fold-out shows the entire vessel. Fold-out on the final spread reveal a bright and bustling harbor scene with all the featured boats. Those featured are: sailboat, tugboat, ocean liner, rowboat, ferry, houseboat, and barge.
