Twenty-eight short stories depict life in Moscow, USSR in the mid-1980s focussing on various aspects of everyday life from author’s own experience. Each story is narrated in a personal style ending with a scientific update on how matters have progressed in the last 25 years, showing domestic and international expansion of former true communists and currently members of “United Russia” party, and their overwhelming and dominating endeavour for personal wealth acquisition, as the main principle of domestic and international policy. I was very pleased with this book because it's the first book I've found that explains every day life in Moscow. How they talk, what they eat when there's nothing to eat, how much they make per month and the equivalent of rubbles vs USD. The author goes into detail about LIFE in Moscow during the 1980's and how things haven't changed much. He explains what's on TV, what books they can read, how books are smuggled in, the living conditions and how long a family must wait for a one room apartment. It's definitely a good read for those curious about life in Russia. He does not revolve around specific leaders by simply calling them THEM.
The book is a collection of short stories about what it was really like to live in Moscow, USSR in the mid-1980s. The focus is on different aspects of everyday life, such as shopping, reading books and newspapers, going to work, church, cinema, watching movies and TV etc, shedding light on some of the frequently bizarre problems we faced. This book is written from a first person perspective, with me being the main character. The first part of each story is narrated in a very personal and emotional style, and there are elements that can be sad, funny, ironic, optimistic or pessimistic. The conclusion of each story is written in a scientific style by way of an update of how matters have progressed in the last 25 years, i.e. up to the present time, to find a picture quite different from the official party line as well as common Western perception. The book will appeal to the broad Western public with an interest in aspects of Russia and other Communist or developing countries. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
