These poems assert through lyric that the past, our natural environment, our history is not entirely lost to the attentive, loving, expressive imagination. It can be encased in careful words. I like the writer. At one point she rejects the word "precious" as a pejorative, and I do too. These poems remind me of Ropert Brooke's poem "The Lover". They are much more modern in style, but with a similar catalogue-like quality that left me a little sad, but prepared to look more carefully at my own world. Poetry. WOODNOTE is Christine Deavel's debut and winner of the 2011 Dorothy Brunsman Poetry Prize. Indiana is the backdrop for poems that range through time and lyrically blend poetry, prose, and fragment to deliver their news: "Knowledge comes as a covering snow; below is the old understanding."
