Junior Edition: InfoTrac is a middle grade electronic research database published by Gale Cengage Learning. The resources include newspaper articles, magazine articles, academic journals, and reference sources in the humanity and social science content areas. The homepage has a Google inspired keyword search bar, with tabs for subject, publication title and words anywhere searches. Conveniently, the search bar autofills suggested searches based on what the user enters. Also available are options for advanced searching. The homepage includes suggestions of popular articles and popular searches. The results page is easily readable, including metadata of more sophisticated databases, like a snippet, publication information, resource type, and resource length. The results page also offers faceted searches, allowing the user to limit their search further based on resource type, subjects, publication dates, and publication title. Additionally, the tool offers suggested videos and images related to the search. These features scaffold the searching process and will help facilitate information literacy skills in young researchers. The information included is up to date and includes a variety of popular and academic sources. The databases has a social media feature, allowing articles and resources to be easily shareable. The database makes use of advance research strategies that would be suitable for middle school or high school students. This database is recommended for purchase in a school or public library as an electronic resource tool. (Ages 12-17) ( ) 5 to 8th grade. Offered by many public libraries, the subscription based database Junior Edition Infotrac is a great resource for middle school aged students. As of December 15, 2011, it contains 1,231,454 articles published between 1980 and 2011, and the database was specifically designed for middle school students' research needs. It offers access to "indexed and full-text magazines, newspapers and reference books for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, people, government, history, sports and more." Patrons can search it through Basic or Advanced Search. If searching through Basic Search one can type in free text. By leaving the "Search Assist" on, the database will offer suggested keywords. Or one can do Boolean searching in the Advanced Search section and limit results with such attributes as publication date, document type, publication title, publication subject, and Lexile reading level. The Lexile reading level is very handy for assisting early teens. It even has a translation feature for 34 languages. Due to all these robust features, young patrons may need assistance but will be able to pull out quality research.
