Darynda Jones, author of The New York Times bestselling series that began with First Grave on the Right, brings us Death and the Girl Next Door, a thrilling Young Adult novel garnering high praise and early buzz from major authors
Ten years ago, Lorelei's parents disappeared without a trace. Raised by her grandparents and leaning on the support of her best friends, Lorelei is finally beginning to accept the fact that her parents are never coming home. For Lorelei, life goes on.
High school is not quite as painful as she thinks it will be, and things are as normal as they can be. Until the day the school's designated loner, Cameron Lusk, begins to stalk her, turning up where she least expects it, standing outside her house in the dark, night after night. Things get even more complicated when a new guy-terrifying, tough, sexy Jared Kovach-comes to school. Cameron and Jared instantly despise each other and Lorelei seems to be the reason for their animosity. What does Jared know about her parents? Why does Cameron tell Jared he can't have Lorelei? And what will any of them do when Death comes knocking for real? Thrilling, sassy, sexy, and inventive, Darynda Jones's first foray into the world of teens will leave readers eager for the next installment.

2.75-Good writing, unique plot but i just didnt feel engaged with the character's ( )

Darynda Jones' Charley Davidson series is one of my absolute favorite book series. So I was very interested to see how I was going to like her young adult series. It's not Charley Davidson but it is a ton of fun. I felt like this book did a lot of build up for the other books in the series instead of jumping into and having a complete story in and of itself. However, Lorelei has a lot of the same sarcasm that Charley has and I totally see similarities between other characters in the Charley Davidson series and this series. Of course, that could be just because both series use the same narrator, Lorelei King. As usual, Lorelei King does a fantastic job with this audiobook. ( )

I am a huge fan of Darynda Jones's Charley Davidson series, so I immediately picked this one up. While I liked it, and will more than likely pick up the next one, it didn't grab me the way her Charley Davidson series has. I found some issues with the plot and pacing of Death and the Girl Next Door. It seemed a bit uneven, both in character development and plot, that is more reminiscent of a debut novelist than a seasoned writer. At times, it almost seemed like she was trying to cram a lot into this one book, and maybe with the editing process, some parts got cut that resulted in the choppiness? Not sure. But it clearly wasn't up to the same level as her Charley Davidson series.

That being said, I did like the characters. Ms. Jones has again created fun and engaging characters that you will root and cheer for. I just hope the next book in the series finds a better balance than this one. ( )

Death and the Girl Next Door
Darklight, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: I love this author’s Charley Davidson series and was curious about her other titles

The Characters:

Lorelei McAlister:
Cameron Lusk:
Jared Kovach:
Glitch, Brooklyn and several others

The Story:

So I admit I picked this up because I love Charley (I want to be her when I grow up) I see a lot of Charley in Lorelei. Loves her coffee. Is brave, determined, cares for others before herself. Oh and Jared is totally a Reyes Jr.

But it’s not all Charley and Reyes Jr. I enjoyed getting to know Lorelei and the gang. It’s a mysterious tale. The end was shocking and I look forward to reading the next to volumes.

Writing: Very good. Very twisty.
Overall Interest: I’m not going to lie I did zone out from time to time but I was able to pick the story back up without too much trouble.
Length of Reading Time: 5 days. Decent for me.
Re-read-ability: Don’t think I will

The Random Thoughts:

3.5 Stars ( )

⇝My Thoughts⇜

Girl meets boy…girl has instant connection to boy…girl finds out she's something paranormal-ish, and boy is too. Been there, done that. If you like that sort of read and don't mind some high schoolish antics (like…wtf was up with the impromptu ghost hunting they did?) then this story is a well written one. It had it's funny moments, I'll give it that. Unfortunately, it just isn't for me. I think I'm over this kind of read. Maybe, I should quit trying to make this genre work for me, but some of paranormal out there is doable for me. Still trying to decide if I want to give her adult series (Charley Davidson) a try. It seems to have more Mystery approach, so it might work.
