What would you do to win your freedom?

This is the question that sets bondwoman, Martise of Asher, on a dangerous path. In exchange for her freedom, she bargains with her masters, the mage-priests of Conclave, to spy on the renegade sorcerer, Silhara of Neith. The priests want Martise to expose the sorcerer's treachery and turn him over to Conclave justice. A risky endeavor, but one she accepts without hesitationâ??until she falls in love with her intended target.

Silhara of Neith, Master of Crows, is a desperate man. The god called Corruption invades his mind, seducing him with promises of limitless power if he will help it gain dominion over the world. Silhara struggles against Corruption's influence and searches for ways to destroy the god. When Conclave sends Martise as an apprentice to help him, he knows she's a spy. Now he fights a war on two frontsâ??against the god who would possess him and the apprentice who would betray him.

Mage and spy search together for a ritual that will annihilate Corruption, but in doing so, they discover secrets about each other that may damn them both. Silhara must decide if his fate, and the fate of nations, is worth the soul of the woman he has come to love, and Martise must choose continued enslavement or freedom at the cost of a man's life. And love… (altro)

I didn't like most of Master of Crows, although it had its good parts. I made myself finish the book because I wanted to see how it ended, but I ended up skimming some of it.

Most of the story didn't hold my interest and the book felt way longer than it actually was. A lot of things, like the magic system, weren't described in a satisfying way so it ended up feeling flat. The characters and the romance didn't work for me either. The hero was a morally grey character, but he didn't have that spark that made him likable and I didn't buy into his feelings for the heroine. The heroine had very little personality, besides being servile and being in love with the hero for some inexplicable reason.

The best parts of the book was Gurn, the mute servant, and Cael, the magic dog, and neither of them said anything. :/

I loved two other books written by this author, Entreat Me and Radiance, so I'm kind of bummed that this one didn't work for me. I'll definitely try something else by Grace Draven, but probably not for a while. ( )

There was definitely something...sumputuous about this book. Draven is at pains to describe the world and motivations of the primary characters. The 3rd person perspective goes between Martise and Silhara, offering the reader a sometimes unnecessary but often intriguing dichotomy of perception.

I will say while the relationship between the two built nicely it did kind of sideline the plot at times. ( )

I don't really have anything bad to say about this except for unoriginal.
It is a sweet romance story in which everything feels like a device for the purpose of said romance.
The story is simple and predictable which isn't necessarily a bad thing because this kind of romance can be enjoyable as is.
The logic behind the magic is a bit weak even tho its the unexplained kind.
The magic feels more like a tool that just fills whatever purpose is required at the moment.
(I probably should mention that there is quite a bit of smut.)
An enjoyable read but nothing special. ( )

Starts slow, but worth the trudge through the beginning quarter or so. ( )

I liked this overall, and it's about as close to a romance novel that I would get.

I did however think Martise could have been so much more, and I found myself annoyed at how repetitively they reminded me that she was absolutely not physically attractive in any way, I not only took offense to this as a female but as a human being in general. She wasn't disfigured so I really didn't understand why her 'plainness' had to be mentioned so many time. ( )

This book is dedicated to my editors, Lora Gasway and Mel Sanders. Ladies, without your help, I would have never been able to write "The End." Thank you for your time, your patience, your suggestions, and most of all for your wonderful friendship.

To my sister, Kim Sayre, who has read nearly everything I've written and been one of my most enthusiastic fans. Thanks, kiddo.

Last, but definitely not least, an enthusiastic thank you to Louisa Gallie who found the heart of this book and brought it to vivid life in her stunning painting BeyondNeith.
