Eddie’s War by Carol Fisher Saller
Lately it seems I am reading a lot of books about World War II. Maybe it is because I teach literature that deals with it. The first thing I like was that this book was written in verse. This story covers ten years. Eddie is a young boy who befriends Jozef Mirga, a Polish Gypsy. He reads the newspaper at the local library looking for information about the Nazis and Poland. This is where Jozef’s wife and son are. When Eddie’s brother goes off to war he is very proud of him. The story is full of life lessons Eddie learns as he grows up. I highly recommend this book. It has quickly become one of my favorites of the year.

This will be a good recommendation for the reluctant reader who must read an historical novel. Good storytelling, good characters. It is a quick read but has depth. Well done. ( )

The years leading up to and during World War II as seen through the eyes of a boy living in rural Illinois. Vivid and insightful historical fiction but not particularly engrossing. ( )

Saller’s poems build from finely delineated episodes of no immediately apparent weight into a cumulative portrait of a tightly interlocked community, where routine, patriotism, and neighborly support cannot always confine darker attitudes and deeds to the shadows. The contemplative tone of the entries and the misplaced accusations against an innocent man are reminiscent of Betsy Byars’ Keeper of the Doves (BCCB 1/03); readers who step into Eddie’s shoes will appreciate that coming of age often involves seeing your family and friends for exactly what they are.

"As a judge for this year’s National Book Award, friends have been asking me what wonderful titles I found along the way . . . what I, personally, consider the greatest YA titles entering the marketplace this year. . . . These, in addition to the five finalists, are simply my own, top-tier favorites. . . .

"Eddie’s War by Carol Fisher Saller shows us the impact of WWII on a farm boy in the Heartland. True and tender.”

“Narrated by Eddie, these seventy-six vignettes are beautifully phrased and vividly revealing of character. . . . An authentic window into the past that recalls the narrative power of Karen Hesse’s verse.”

[Starred review] “In spare language and remarkably short sketches, carefully selected details effectively portray well-rounded, interesting characters, from Eddie’s abusive grandfather to his evolving love interest, Sarah. . . . Much more an emotionally resonant coming-of-age tale than a war story . . . an easy sell for those seeking a quick, excellent read.”
