King Henry III has suppressed the elected Parliament and returned England to the abusive governance that the Provisions of Oxford of 1258 corrected. But a new force is rising to oppose him. Young lords, the common people, even the outlaws of Sherwood and the Weald are organizing, led by Simon's cousin Peter de Montfort and Gilbert de Clare. Condemned as a traitor, Simon is lured back to England from his refuge in France where he has taken the Cross of a crusader and is about to leave for the Holy Land. Seeing the cause he championed reviving, he agrees to be the leader of this new army.In the end he will be recognized by the people as the Angel of the Apocalypse, as the thousand year process commences in which the Church and nations dissolve in a single world order governed by the common people inspired by the Holy Spirit -- as predicted in the millennial theology of Joachim de Flor.… (altro)

Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester, was one of the most significant figures in the development of our democratic system of government. He led the Second Barons’ War in 1263, forcing an elected parliament on King Henry III. Despite his historical significance, he is little known to Americans. This historical novel is an antidote to that.
The story begins with Simon’s coming of age and continues through his adventurous life. This is a massive work, 4 volumes, over 1500 pages; the story does move along, though. Of course, this is a fictionalized account, but it is well-researched, including notes and a bibliography. This is an enjoyable read, and you will understand Simon de Montfort’s significance in the development of democratic parliamentary systems when you’re done. ( )

I thought the 4 volumes of Montfort would last me all winter, but swept along with the story I finished them in, figuratively, in one breath. The story of Montford and his fight to establish Parliament is exciting, captivating. The ending is history, not a fairy tale and not the ending I hoped for. But what he fought for has lasted to the present day, Montford left the world a better place than he found it. How he did it despite the obstacles he faced throughout his life are what make his story worth 4 volumes and the effort to read them. The volumes are well complimented by the author's notes and the Historical Notes at the end of each volume, tying history and the author's understanding of the events together. ( )
