This book has a lot of information. There are a lot of details but it is simple enough to understand. The pictures don’t help too much with the understanding of text if you do not know the text. ( )

Planets Around The Sun: Seymour Simon
This informational book about planets in our solar system is perfect for a much younger classroom such as first and second grade. It gives brief yet informative descriptions on all the planets in our solar system.

I figured that this book would just a child’s book on planets but it did have quite a good bit of information. I stand behind my summary and feel as though this is a very informative book for a younger classroom that can be used as a mini lesson on the planets.

1- Solar system display to hang in the classroom
2- Group projects on a specific planets

Summary- This book is an informative book about planets. It tells facts about planets like the size and what their masses contain. It also compares each plants to one another.

Personal Reaction- I love learning about planets and i thought this book was a good informational book for younger aged children. I like how it talked about each planet specifically. At the end of the book there is a helpful chart that compares all of the planets.

Classroom extension ideas-
1) Put students into groups and have them pick a planet and do research about it.
2) Make a solar system with the whole class.

Personal Reaction:
I thought this book was very informational! Even for little kids who might be learning about the different planets, this is a great starter book for them to learn and read because it’s a level one reading book. I think children would be very interested to pick this book up and see the planets up close for themselves. Though I would not read this book to a class, I would have this on the shelf for the students to pick to read.

Extension Ideas:
1) Have the class break into small group or partners and give each group a planet to make up a small poster and presentation of. They could do a little research and give facts about the planet to share with the class.
2) Have the students write in their daily writing journal about what they would do if they traveled to one of the planets. Have them talk about what they would do on the planet, if there were other people or aliens, and what did it look like. ( )

Summary:
This book is about our solar system. The sun and everything that travels around it is known as the solar system. The book goes into depth about all of the planets and their characteristics. Earth is the only planet with water and life. Scientists are interested in Mars because they are looking for signs of life there, but so far they haven't found anything. At the end of the book, it has a chart with the planets' distances, diameters, moons, rings, and temperature.

Personal Reaction: This book is simple enough for a young class to understand what the solar system is and all of the planets. It is a great way to introduce them to the planets. I think a science book would make it too complicated for them, so I would start out with this book.

Classroom Extensions:
1. I would have the students make their own solar system with different materials.
2. I would go outside with a telescope and have the students look through and see what all we can find in the sky. ( )
