When the story opens, Cicero, the elder guardian is training Marco, his young prot g about the ways of men. An avid reader and beloved library cat with a room of his own, Cicero often quotes wise men about the dangers of power. Cicero's old archenemy, a dark Magician who would sell his soul to obtain the Book, reappears, along with his shadowy companions, the Whisperers. He calls himself Professor Chin, but he is no teacher. He believes he is destined to create a new world order.
