For most musicians and musicologists in the West, traditional Albanian music remains an obscure subject, even though Albania has produced a monumental cultural and corresponding musical heritage. This book examines the distinct musical culture of southeastern Europe, both monophonic and polyphonic, by delineating its four main musical dialects: Gheg, Tosk, Lab and Urban. The origins, fundamental features, musical styles and genres of the four dialects are discussed. Additional topics covered include an historical and demographic analysis of Albania, the history of Albanian ethnomusicology and the various classifications in Albanian music. Relying heavily on field research and recordings, this text introduces traditional Albanian music to both ethnomusicologists and curious readers.… (altro)

This book is definitely intended for music scholars, and as such was pretty difficult going for me. It is well bound and well-presented, and contains sheet music and detailed information. ( )

I gave this book to a friend, who absolutely loved it but wished for an accompanying CD. I don't know much about Albanian music, but this seemed like an excellent introduction.

This book is really a book for two target audiences. The first being musicologists and serious musicians who will enjoy the discussion of the different types and styles of Albanian music in the first section ( which I did enjoy though it's been years since I've taken a theory class) and the second part which has sheet music and lyrics (plus a section with the lyrics and their english translations) which I just loved. I've read all the lyrics and played through almost all of the songs and they are just gorgeous. I think anyone who has an interest in either Albania, musicology, or world music should get this. ( )

It's been a while since I played an instrument, but my mom, who plays the guitar, and I sat down and did a couple of duets and had the best of times! I admit, I have a fondness for Albania which probably made it that much better, as the music served as a reminder of the time that I was there. ( )

I received this book via Early Reviewers. Of all the books I've received thus far, this is the most unusual, but perhaps the one with the most potential for long-term rewards. It's a fascinating subject, and although this is my first exposure to Albanian traditional music, I appreciate the opportunity to explore something like this. I found it helpful to track down samples of the music online, to bring some of these songs to life as I read. Wonderful! ( )
