Adam Newman once had it all. But then he lost it. Now Adam yearns to reunite with his estranged wife, Evelyn, and recapture the Edenic life they once had running Paradise Dogs, the roadside hot dog restaurant now legendary throughout central Florida. He has a few obstacles along the way, though. For starters, there's his impending marriage to Lily. There's also the matter of a quarter million dollars' worth of diamonds that he mislaid, along with what appears to be a shadowy conspiracy that is buying up land around the Cross-Florida Canal (and which may or may not be a product of Adam's alcohol-infused imagination). Despite his own troubles- and a brief stay in Chattahoochee- Adam looks to mentor his son, Addison, in the ways of love. Awkward, unsure, and employed as the world's least accurate obituary writer, Addison pines for a beautiful and painfully earnest linguistic student but must compete for her attention with his older and more sophisticated half brother from Evelyn's first marriage. But if anybody can set these worlds in order, it is Adam, who has an uncanny knack for being in the right place at the right time and allowing others to believe he's someone he's not. Whether it's delivering a baby, rescuing a marriage, or exposing a Communist conspiracy, our protagonist is up for the job.--Book jacket.… (altro)

The characters in Paradise Dogs are quirky and the story is wacky. The author's writing is so descriptive you feel like you've stepped right into the hot, humid Florida setting. I really wanted to like the book, but I just didn't connect with the main character.

Wow! What can I say about this book that hasn't been said already? The characters are all uniquely Florida and the situations in the novel could really happen in this zany state! I look forward to future outings from this better than average writer.

This was an Early Reviewers win.Adam Newman is a very odd, quirky alcoholic. He wants to reunite with his ex, but is engaged to Lily. It's hard to watch and read about the things he messes up while drunk, even if many turn out for the best. I was ambivalent about this book, feel uncomfortable laughing at a drunk.

I won this book on Library Thing's early review copy and I found it hard to follow. The book is set in the 60's and has a few main characters. Adam Newman is yearning to reunite with his estranged wife and recapture what they once had when they ran their legendary hot dog restaurant. I did find some things in this book cute, for the most part was rather shifty to say the least. Adam is somewhat of an eccentric character, which is to a degree a bit delusional in assuming other peoples identities. This was a quick read, but the plot is kind of hard to follow. One thing I did enjoy about the book was the descriptive passages of Florida; the author did well in that regard, otherwise a mediocre book. ( )

Paradise Dogs: A Novel by Man Martin

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book set in pre-Disney Florida. I'm a Florida resident and know that a lot of weird and wacky things seem to happen here in real life. Man Martin takes his main character Adam Newman and drags him from one wild situation to another. Adam Newman is a goofy real estate agent who falls into one wacky situation from another. He really wants to help people and this happens in funny and weird ways. He assumes ids on the spur of the moment to help people. From delivering a baby in the back seat of a car, acting as a marriage counselor , talking his way out of a ticket but into Chattahoochee (mental hospital in Florida), Adam will keep you laughing as he tries to get his wife back after years of being divorced (and he is engaged to someone else too.) Man Martin's descriptive narratives make you feel like you can smell the flowers and feel the heat. This is a fast ride through crazy situations. Hang on to your hat and welcome to Florida!
