By the time she was 12, she was considered one of the finest pianists in Europe, but today few people know her name. Maria Mozart, like her famous brother Wolfgang, was a musical prodigy. The talented siblings toured Europe, playing before kings and empresses, were showered with gifts and favors, and lived in a whirlwind life of music and travel. They were best friends, collaborators, and confidantes. As they grew older, Wolfgang was encouraged to pursue his musical ambitions, while Maria was told she must stop performing and, ultimately, marry. But she was determined to continue playing the piano every day, for the love of music . . . .… (altro)

Beautifully told with each section corresponding to a part of a sonata. ( )

This is a book to read slowly and savor. The lyrical text is structured after a musical sonata and is divided into sections with musical headings (and definitions). Most of the sections are only a paragraph or two, but the words are well-chosen and descriptive. The illustrations are beautiful and rich with patterns and textures. Combined, the text and illustrations are full of sensory details, which give the impression of brief, but profound memories that have been polished and strung together. The back matter includes a more detailed biography, followed by a bibliography.

For additional reading, this would pair well with Catherine Brighton's "Mozart: Scenes from the Childhood of the Great Composer", which is more detailed, but targeted towards a slightly younger audience. ( )

Ma - ria Anna Mozart, like her famous broth - er, Wolfgang, was a musical prodigy. The talented siblings lived in a world of music performances and travel.

This book is about Mozart's sister who never got as famous, even though they were equally great at the piano. The world only knew Maria Anna Mozart when she was 10 and played with her little brother in front of kings and queens of Europe. But then their father stopped bringing Maria on tours. Eventually, she became married and had step- and then her own children. What this book uncovers is that she never stopped playing piano "for the love of music", and when she was older she taught promising boys and girls her craft. The book ends with her playing with her nephew for hours in four hands, just like she did with her brother when they were little. It is not fair that she never got a break like Wolfgang did. Who knows, maybe the world lost a great musician. At least, she will never be forgotten. I enjoyed it's book and it's clever composition. ( )

Nice children's book on Mozart's sister, who was a formidable musician in her own right who never received the fame Mozart did, and whose compositions have unfortunately been lost. An adult oriented summary of her life and a bibliography appear at the end of the book. The artwork is mixed media and neat as well. ( )
