The story ends with a reference to "Hinei Ma Tov" and says that the Temple in Jerusalem was built on the spot where the story occurred. (According to a quick Internet search, the story is not an ancient Hebrew legend---the first mention seems to be in a French book in the 19th century. see https://jewishaction.com/religion/jewish-law/whats-the-truth-about-the-legend-of...

Picture book. This is about two brothers named Dan and Joel who both grew up as wheat farmers in Israel. When their dad dies they are both given one half of the total land. As they grew up they went down different life paths, Hoel married and had three kids whereas Dave never married. One night during a dry year they both felt bad for the other and would both bring wheat to the others house at night without the other brother knowing. One night the brothers met each other where the land was divided and gave each other a big hug. ( )

This retelling of an old Hebrew legend celebrates "how good it is for brothers to live together in friendship." With simple text and pen and watercolor illustrations on each page, this is a good elementary reader or a good read-aloud for any age.

A classic Jewish folk tale, well told. Each man considers his brother's needs to be more than his own, and offers some of what he has to his brother. The site of this act of love becomes the site of the Holy Temple. - Marla S. ( )

In my opinion, this was an eye opening story. Even though the reader cannot literally know what the brothers been through, readers can relate easily to their relationship with their siblings. This is an eye opening book because you never really think about situations with your siblings until something comes up. Because family is so close, there is no reason to always cherish their presence and relationship. It is when you separate that you truly, genuinely care and miss the ones you grew up with. The overall meaning of this story is to keep your family close. There is nothing like a sibling love. One that will always be there so make it a good one. A great read for maturing students and something that really makes the reader think more deeply in a serious manner. ( )
