Boss, a loner, loved to dive into derelict spacecraft adrift in the blackness of space... But one day, she found a ship that would change everything--an ancient Dignity Vessel--and aboard the ship, the mysterious and dangerous Stealth Tech. Now, years after discovering that first ship, Boss has put together a large company that finds Dignity Vessels and finds "loose" Stealth Technology. Following a hunch, Boss and her team come to investigate the city of Vaycehn, where fourteen archeologists have died exploring the endless caves below the city. Mysterious "death holes" explode into the city itself for no apparent reason, and Boss believes Stealth Tech is involved. As Boss searches for the answer to the mystery of the death holes, she will uncover the answer to her Dignity Vessel quest as well--and one more thing, something so important that it will change her life--and the universe--forever.… (altro)

Definitely enjoyed this, even though the ending didn't resolve much and clearly led straight to the next story.

The Diving Universe is one of my favourite science fiction universes ever since I encountered it in Asimov's Science Fiction magazine (or possibly Analog - it's been too long since I last encountered them!) and the transfer to novel length hasn't hurt the story telling one bit. I liked this novel in particular as it isn't set in deep space, but on a planet, which is as far outside the comfort zone of Boss and her regular crew as the regular space settings are for me so Boss is fighting the unusual gravity as well as trying to find out what is going on in the Caves under the ancient city. There semi legitimately, Boss and the team also have to work around the locals unwillingness to let the team explore and what they find sets up an additional level of problems to be solved without involving the local stellar power. Be careful what you wish for should be the tagline for this book!

Rusch never disappoints here. The buildup may have been a bit slow at first but once the teams start getting together everything sails towards the end. ( )

A nice continuation of the series, but a bit thin on narrative. The use of dual narrators works well, but a little bit stiff. The cover illustration just looks baffling and awkward, although it manages to avoid many of the usual problems of illustrating female protagonists. ( )
