Admittedly, I am a Warhammer noob but after watching my SO play Total War for a while, I decided I really wanted to know more. It was rather amusing to be able to pick places out on a mental map when they were named. Personally I'd have liked to have read more about the Chaos or the Counts or—of couuuuurse—the Greenskins. And acceptable start to those interested in Warhammer lore and an easy read. I've been wanting to jump into the world of Warhammer after exploring the 40K world for a year and a half now. I heard from someone at the local bookstore that Gotrek & Felix was a good place to start in this Warhammer infancy world. I am glad that I did. The first novel in this genre consisted of several short stories somewhat linked together and followed the exploits of Felix Jaeger and Gotrek Gurnisson as they always seem to end up battling the evil forces of Chaos motivated by Gotrek's wish to die fighting a noble battle against said antagonists. Felix somewhat reluctantly follows Gotrek after a drunken oath to stay with him after Gotrek saves his life, and the author really portrays a genuine human character in Felix as he seems to overcome his fear to rise to the occasion time after time. Many adventures lie ahead as this is but the first of several G&F novels ahead for this reader in the future. I am also looking forward to expanding the Warhammer world after G&F someday. -The first in a series of books following the Troll Slayer Gortek and his unwitting historian Felix Jaeger. After being saved from near death, Felix swears to follow the dwarf and record the history of his death, as the slayer is sworn to die in a great combat to atone for past wrongs. The pair wander through the empire of man, caught up in the vast tidal wave of local, national, and supernatural politics. They find themselves constantly being thrown into vast plots by the minions of the great Chaos powers. From stopping evil covens, to the full-fledged battles against the beastmen of Khorne, the two never cease in their quest for Gortek’s death. They wander to the lands of the borderprince, where Felix’s first love is murdered by a mad nobleman. They descend in the depths of Karak Eight Peaks in search of lost gold and free tortured dwarf spirits from purgatory. They end the depravities of cultists, noble and mutant alike in several villages. Deprived of a heroic death, the two head to the great city of Nuln for work and the next installment. The world of Warhammer does indeed come to life in this series of short stories. I say stories, as even though they are connected in plot and somewhat in timeline, they read like the serialized prose they were. King does a great job with his descriptions and really captures the feel of the Warhammer world. The major drawbacks are the repetitive dialogue and monologues and the feelings that there is no way for the heroes to lose. One knows that no matter the foe, the set up or the suspense, the two will be fine. In the short story setting it works fine and is forgivable. In a full-length book, it is hard to take. Readers beware that Trollslayer is really a collection of short stories rather than one plot. Each chapter follows the intrepid heroes as they encounter the forces of Chaos, in which there are no recurring charcters apart from the titular Gotrek & Felix. The adventures themselves are simple, quick and shallow, offering no twists or real surprises. That noted, this does offer a quick blast, a reminiscence of the early days of roleplaying games and the scenarios they conjured up. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
