On rubyrebel's wishlist, bought to read first. Mostly pictures, with captions, telling Pukka's first 6 months of life. Read Merle first - the captions will make much more sense if you do that (because as the title says, it's really about the puppy that came after Merle, so knowing Merle's story helps) ( )

Okay, this is one of those quick reads story wise but the accompanying photographs are what will give you paws...excuse me, pause. Seriously...once I picked it up, I finished it in a sitting. EVERY PAGE has a photo to take you along on Pukka and Ted's adventures. From the adorably cute to those captured on their many wilderness hikes, it seems this pair though still in the beginning phases of their relationship (as Pukka is only 6 months old by the book's end) have created a strong bond of friendship, love, and loyalty that will serve them well in the years to come.

Recommended reading for fans of the author's previous work about his first puppy friend Merle, as well as dog lovers the world wide. Just try not to smile at the antics of this young beauty as he grows from precocious little one to a boisterous fun loving pup ready to take on the world. A touching recollection of puppyhood if I've ever seen one....happy reading! ( )

Not in the same league as "Merle's Door" but a pleasant read with lots of photos. Reading this book would be a simple, easy way to learn good, basic dog training. ( )

Ted Kerasote’s name is linked indelibly to his yellow lab Merle – a dog who touched his heart and became the subject of Kerasote’s best selling book Merle’s Door. When Merle died, Kerasote received thousands of emails asking if he was going to get another dog. Fans need not ask the question any longer. Pukka, a yellow lab whose face reminded the author of Merle, has found his forever home with Kerasote.

Narrated in the wise and charming voice of Pukka, Kerasote’s latest book is heartwarming, yet also bittersweet. The reader cannot help but feel the loss of Merle between the pages despite the obvious love for Pukka. Our hearts are always big enough to hold another canine partner, but we never forget those who came before.

Perhaps the best part of this sweet book are the more than two hundred photos which include Pukka as a young pup, as well as stunning images of the Tetons and other natural environments where Pukka gets lessons in swimming, canoeing and hiking to the tops of mountain peaks.

This wonderful book is perfect for readers of all ages and would make a wonderful book for children who have lost a dog and are getting a new puppy. The gorgeous photography also make it a great gift for dog lovers (especially those who love labs!).

Readers who have had the joy of experiencing life with a dog will undoubtedly see themselves and their canine friends between the pages of Kerasote’s book. Pukka: The Pup After Merle is highly recommended as a quick, enjoyable read for adults and children alike. ( )

All fans of Merle's Door , one of the best dog memoirs out there will want to check this book out, but this book is way different. For one thing, it is a picture book. You'll "read" it in under a half hour, but there are some spectacular pictures, not only of dogs (Pukka plus a lot of dog buddies), but also of the amazing scenery where Ted and Pukka live up in Wyoming, and their trips to Idaho and the Oregon coast.

I pre-ordered this book on Amazon, because I had enjoyed Merle's Door so much, and I like to reward authors who entertain me that well by purchasing their books. This is a nice book to own, one that you can look at the wonderful photographs over and over again.

It also makes you really wish we all were in a position to give a dog that kind of life; all dogs should be so lucky. ( )
