Arnold J. Toynbee was born in London, England on April 14, 1889. He was educated at Balliol College, Oxford and studied briefly at the British School at Athens. He served in the British foreign office during both world wars and was a delegate to the 1919 Paris Peace Congress. From 1925 to 1955, he mostra altro held the position of director of studies at the Royal Institute of International Affairs and was professor of history at the University of London during approximately the same time. His publications include The Western Question in Greece and Turkey, Civilization on Trial, East to West: A Journey round the World, the 12-volume A Study of History, and Hellenism: The History of a Civilization. I primi capitoli inquadrano ciò che si può definire la condizione umana sulla Terra: quella di un essere vivente dotato, a differenza di tutti gli altri, di "coscienza e finalità ", in cui si incontrano enigmaticamente la dimensione fisica e corporea, e la dimensione spirituale e morale. Un essere che vive nella biosfera, la tenue pellicola abitabile sulla superficie di un pianeta insignificante, nella quale, non sappiamo come e perché, si è prodotta la vita, e che nel corso del tempo è giunto a possedere una tale potenza di azione sul mondo fisico da mettere in pericolo l'esistenza della biosfera stessa, compresa la sua propria specie. E ancora, un essere che ha conseguito una conoscenza sempre maggiore del mondo fisico, ma per cui restano misteriose le ragioni ultime dell'esistenza dell'universo, e che deve ricorrere alle risposte "inverificate e inverificabili" fornite dalle religioni.
Nella lunga narrazione, Toynbee si pone l'obiettivo esplicito di superare un punto di vista centrato sull'Europa (o comunque, sull'Occidente), per fornire una panoramica equilibrata sia nel tempo sia nello spazio. Quindi, rispetto alle più usuali visioni della storia, non dilata gli avvenimenti più vicini nel tempo, e dedica ampio spazio alle civiltà extraeuropee. Ci riesce piuttosto bene, con la vistosa eccezione di quelle dell'Africa subsahariana, su cui non c'è nemmeno una parola (non dice nulla nemmeno dei nativi nordamericani o degli aborigeni australiani, degli amazzoni o dei fuegini, ma questi sembrano davvero popoli senza storia). Oltre alle vicende politiche, nella narrazione accenna anche ai principali sviluppi culturali ed economici, e dà ampio rilievo alla religione (che definisce "la chiave di volta della civiltà "). Spesso pratica rapidi confronti e parallelismi tra aspetti di civiltà lontane tra loro nello spazio e nel tempo. E non risparmia, qua e là , osservazioni pungenti o amare sulle vicende umane. È una panoramica a grande raggio e nel complesso distaccata quella che Toynbee fa, ma non certo ottimistica. Non c'è nessuna esaltazione dell'umanità o del progresso; mi sembra anzi di percepire una certa amarezza di fondo, una dose di realistico, temperato pessimismo, che si manifesta con più evidenza nelle preoccupazioni ambientalistiche evidenti soprattutto nei capitoli introduttivi e in quelli finali.
L'esposizione purtroppo tende ad essere un po' confusa, ma potrebbe dipendere dalla traduzione, che mi dà l'impressione di non essere ben fatta, e contiene parecchi errori (di date, di nomi).… (altro)
