- Elisha G. Sewell is best remembered for his half-century as an editor of the Gospel Advocate, from 1870 until near his death. Most of this period was spent in partnership with the owner, David Lipscomb. During this time the paper became the most influential voice among conservative churches of Christ in the U.S.
